Jonathan's Baptism

July 28 was Jonathan's Baptism day.  We'd all been looking forward to it and planning for a long time.
Jay and Jonathan before the baptism.
And Jonathan being Jonathan!
We had a lovely service, and were so happy to have so many friends and family there.
My handsome men!

I love our family!

These two are best buddies.

Jonathan's Grandma got him a special towel
for his baptism.
It's so hard to believe my Jonathan is 8!  He's such a great kid and so fun to have in our family.

Fun with Grandparents

Jay's parents came to visit this week, so the whole week was full of fun with the grandparents.  From the time they arrived on Monday, it was a busy week full of showing Grandma and Grandpa all the fun and different things to do in Texas.

Tuesday morning, Jay, the kids, and his parents got up and drove to Galveston for a day of beach fun and exploring.  (Since we only have 7 seats in the van, I stayed home for the day.)  They took the ferry to Port Bolivar, had a picnic, explored Galveston, and spent some time on the beach.  Unfortunately, the beach wasn't as much fun as usual due to the record breaking amount of seaweed that's been coming in this year. Jonathan normally loves swimming in the gulf, but was a little creeped out by the seaweed grabbing his legs. They still had a great day, and came home late and exhausted.

else wanted to stop there either!
Meanwhile, I rode with Rebecca to the airport to pick up Rachel.  Rachel wasn't expecting me, so it was fun to go surprise her.  Rebecca and I had quite the adventure driving to the slightly scary Hobby airport, especially when we found the "cell phone lot", which looked like somebody's afterthought.  We very carefully locked the doors, and were just as glad when it was time to get Rachel and come home!

the port-a-pots and the random

Wednesday was my semi-annual shopping and fun day with my mother and sisters.  When Rachel comes to visit, we go to the mall for conversation, shopping, and a ridiculous lunch.  We had a usual fantastic day, including Cheesecake Factory (yum!) for lunch.
Jonathan hadn't been acting like himself since his birthday--tired, cold, no appetite, and really quiet.  Over the weekend he started having a cough.  We'd thought it was better on Monday, but he'd been worse again on Tuesday at the beach, so Jay took him to the pediatrician Wednesday.  Turned out he had the beginnings of a sinus infection, so they came home with a prescription for an antibiotic and a cough suppressant.  They all had a pretty quiet day at home with Grandma and Grandpa, then Jay took his parents and the kids to gymnastics that night.  Jon ended up sitting out most of his class, but it was fun for the grandparents to see Westwood and watch Emily do her thing.

Thursday Jay took Emily and his parents to go skeet shooting.  Emily is apparently a great puller!  They also did some driving around Katy to see the sites and look at the area.  It's always fun to show new eyes all our huge schools and the growth in the area.  The three kids and I stayed home and got some chores done.  Jonathan took his second dose of antibiotic and rested most of the day.

Jonathan is feeling better
and enjoying some baseball.
Thursday night we had tickets to the Skeeters baseball game.  Jonathan was enough better that we decided he could go, and he noticeably perked up as the evening went on.  We all had a great time at the game; we've decided we like the Skeeters' games much better than Major League.

It was a perfect evening--

more!

I think Jonathan is
feeling better.

Friday we had planned to go to the science museum, but we were all fairly worn out from the week, and especially from the late game.  So we mostly bummed around the house all day and got ready for our busy day on Saturday.  Jonathan was definitely better--I knew he was feeling better when he started getting snippy with his brother and sister.  His appetite also seemed to be recovering.  Jay took the girls and his parents for some more sightseeing in the afternoon.  We finished the day with pizza and a four layer, strawberries and whipped cream cake.  All in all, a lovely, relaxing day.

Another busy week!

Summer is definitely keeping us busy!

Abby woke up early  Tuesday
morning and spent her time
making magnet statues.
Tuesday we started our morning with a free movie again.  This time it was Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2.  Emily and Jonathan really liked it, and Benjamin thought parts were really funny.  He was even willing to sit in his own chair this time!  Abby, however, thought it was a little too scary and made us promise to "Never Ever Ever buy that movie" when we got home.

Ben asleep in his big boy bed.  So cute!
In the afternoon, Jay took the kids to the pool.  I had a test on Wednesday, so I stayed home to study.  They all came home waterlogged and happy.  It's so great living in a place where they can swim so often!  Again, the secret to easy bedtime seems to be exhaustion-- we got no arguments from anyone!

Wednesday, my test was in the afternoon.  We had a quiet morning at home, then I took the kids to Momo's house for the afternoon so I could drive into Houston.  They played and ate and did crafts.  I sat in a room and stared at a computer screen for a couple hours.  I think they got the better deal!  I got back in time to eat some pizza and take Emily and Jon to gymnastics while Jay came to get the little ones and take them home.

Thursday was Jonathan's 8th birthday!  We made chocolate chip pancakes (his favorite), and had a day mostly of relaxing and playing instead of working.  For lunch, we tried turkey and cheese scones, which were a fairly dramatic failure.  Thursday was also cake baking day for Jonathan's party Friday night.

Friday we spent the day getting ready for a birthday party.  Lots of house cleaning and cooking and decorating.  We took time in the afternoon for a fun new snack.  Momo and Popo and Rebecca came in the evening for calzones and a giant chocolate cake.  Great food and a fun party!

Trying out the first car of the
train.
Saturday was more cleaning and getting ready for Grandma and Grandpa to come.  Jonathan spent a good part of the day playing with his new birthday toys, especially the Lego train that he got from Momo and Popo.  Everyone enjoyed that!

train.
So it was another busy, not quite what we planned on, sort of a week, but we had a great time!  Looking forward to fun with grandparents for next week!
Abigail thinks the train is pretty
cool.

Marvelous Monday

We started our day with the usual workbooks (and a little whining).  Emily and Jonathan decided they wanted to work on stories again instead of doing the whole stack of workbooks.  After our workbook time, they got to go play for awhile because I had some other stuff to get done.

We made turkey and cheese pinwheels for lunch.  Emily and Abby both inhaled them.  (Jon and Ben opted for different lunch.)  Then it was time to get ready for more swimming!

We had been invited to a friend's house for a swim date, so spent the afternoon in the pool with friends.  Ben is really getting comfortable in the water, which is great.  We had a ton of fun, then packed up to come home, by way of dropping Emily off for a birthday party where she was doing more swimming!

The other three ran through the bath and put on jammies, then chilled out on the couch while I fixed dinner.  Everyone was definitely pretty mellow this evening.

Emily came home happy and tired from the birthday party.  Everyone has settled down pretty quickly tonight.  Apparently exhaustion is the key to easy bedtimes!

Father's Day

The kids love to make a big fuss for Mother's Day and Father's Day.  We always have to do breakfast in bed and they usually make cards and gifts too.

Emily had asked Jay what his favorite breakfast is, and to our surprise, he said it was an omelet.  (Seriously, we've been married for almost 12 years and this was news to me!)  Emily and Abby helped me make him an omelet and some toast and put his tray altogether.

Emily had coordinated a cup full of happy thoughts.  She cut out and put together all sorts of little notes and asked each of us to write a note or two as well.  She also put together a giant book of coupons for things she's willing to do for her dad.

We had to wake Jay up to celebrate him before his breakfast got cold.  After a (somewhat) quiet and relaxing morning at home, it was off to church.  The kids sang with all the Primary children and sounded beautiful.

Now we're home and relaxing together.

Happy father's day!

The summer routine... sort of

Before school got out, we sat down and figured out a basic daily routine.  (The kids and I do better if we have a plan for the day.)  We also planned out some new lunches and snacks to try and Emily helped me schedule them on our master calendar.  But we wanted to leave some room for fun and spontaneity as well.  And this week has definitely been all about spontaneity!

So our original schedule plan was:

Wake up, eat breakfast, get dressed
8:30    Workbooks
10:00  Science lab
11:30  Lunch
12:30  Quiet reading time
2:00    Daily activity (crafts, games, cooking)
3:00    Snack
Free time until Dinner
5:00/5:30  Dinner
6:00     Clean up and pick up
6:30     Baths, stories
8:00     Bed--lights out

Here's how it's really gone...

Monday we got up and got moving with every intention of following our schedule.  Everyone started on workbooks with a minimum amount of whining.  They had a little play time while I set up the science stuff.  My mother found some really awesome Magic School Bus Science kits, so we're working on one a week as the summer goes on.  This week is all about magnets.  We tested lots of objects around the house to see if they were magnetic, then took iron filings and made beards and hair on faces.

While we were working on our science, I got a text message from a friend saying they were going to the pool and inviting us along.  So we threw on our swim stuff, packed a lunch, and went to the pool.  The best part of that was Ben deciding that maybe the pool was pretty fun after all.  After sitting on the edge for quite awhile, then finally got in with me.  By the time we left, he was playing in the water (the shallow end was only a foot deep) and he was the one most upset when it was time to go home!  It was so fun to have him actually enjoying the pool and playing, instead of just sitting on the edge.

We got home, got changed, and just as we were putting our stuff out to dry, we started hearing thunder.  We ended up having a massive Texas thunderstorm, so we had chosen the right time to leave the pool!  All of us were tired from swimming, so Emily and Jonathan went up to have some reading time in their room while Abby, Ben, and I read some books and had some quiet snuggle time downstairs.

Jonathan was in charge of Family Home Evening treats for the night, and wanted to make chocolate chip cookies.  I had seen an article about the science behind chocolate chip cookies, so we decided to start an ultimate chocolate chip cookie search.  We're not going to get as crazy as all that, but figured we'd have fun with trying some different cookies.  So Jonathan made a batch of one variety, Emily made another, and Abby and Ben helped with another.  3 types of cookie dough later, we were ready to make dinner!

After dinner was Family Home Evening.  Emily was in charge of lesson, and she wanted to play a game, so we had a massive game of Sorry.  We had mostly good sports.  Mom and Ben won, but it was a super close game.  Then we taste tested our cookies, and Emily and Jon gave them ratings.  Cookie #3 moved on to the next round.

We already knew that Tuesday was going to be a different sort of day.  Tuesdays are Jay's regular day off, and one of our local movie theaters does free movies on Tuesday and Wednesday during the summer.  So the kids got to do abbreviated workbooks, then we were off to see How to Train Your Dragon.  We had seen that movie approximately a thousand times, but it was really fun to see it on the big screen.

After a quick stop at Momo's house to pick up some stuff, we went home for lunch and decided to hit the pool again.  Benjamin loved the pool again.  Abby is starting to kick her legs, and we're trying to get her ready to start swimming on her own.  Emily loves the water and was happy going down the big slides and was swimming everywhere.  We ended up having a huge game of family tag in the pool, which was pretty funny.

After baths and dinner, Emily had Activity Days with her girls group from church.  And they were....  having a pool party!  So she and I packed up and I dropped her off for more swimming fun.  I then went to the library and Michaels ALONE.  When I got back, she was having fun, and I had other moms to talk to, so she stayed a little later to swim more.  By the time we got home and she took a shower, I'm kind of amazed she made it to bed before falling asleep.

Over the weekend, we had purchased a case of apricots to be turned into jam (23 pounds worth).  I spent Tuesday night pitting apricots so I could start jam on Wednesday.

Wednesday morning, Emily and Jonathan negotiated an exchange of workbook pages for writing a story.  Emily is writing a "chapter book", so she wrote the first two chapters.  Jonathan wrote a short story.  Then the three younger kids disappeared to play while Emily helped me work on jam.  I taught her how to operate the food processor and we talked about how jam is made.  She stirred occasionally too while I was moving laundry and emptying the dishwasher.  After a couple batches, we took a break to make lunch.  We had planned to have pizza monkey bread on Monday, so I had made the dough before we got invited to go swimming.  With Tuesday's craziness, we hadn't made it then either, so that was on the menu for Wednesday.  Emily helped roll the dough, put together all the ingredients, and put it all together.  Everyone except Benjamin thought the end result was delicious.

After our lunch break, it was back to jam.  We ended up making four batches before running out of jars.  And it was time to get early dinner before Emily and Jonathan needed to pack up for gymnastics.  Jay came home from work and the three of us ran out the door.  After their classes, we stopped at Momo's house for more jars so we could finish the rest of the apricots (it turns out that 23 pounds makes A LOT of apricot jam!) and for some leftover chocolate cake.

Thursday ended up being weird again.  Abby had a rash on her back that didn't seem to be getting better, so we scheduled a pediatrician appointment.  The other three didn't really want to go sit at the doctor's office, so they went to play with Momo and Popo and Rebecca while Abby and I trouped across town.  The verdict on the rash was that it was "one of those things", so we left with a prescription for some antibiotic cream and headed back to pick up the others.  Emily and Popo were sitting down to lunch when we got there, so we fed everyone and sat and talked for awhile before going home.  All of us were tired when we got home, so Emily and Abby took a laptop to Abby's bed and Jonathan and Benjamin took a computer to Ben's bed and they watched movies for a little while.  I took a nap!  After an hour or so of quiet, we were all feeling happier and made smoothies for a snack.  Then I got back to jam while the kids played.  We finally finished all the apricots Thursday night.  56 jars ought to last us awhile!

Ben loves sitting in Popo's chair,
whether Popo is in it or not!
Friday my mother had scheduled a play date at the splash pad for the kids, and I needed some study time for a certification exam I have next week.  She picked them up a little before 10 and they were ready and excited to go.  They spent the day playing and making Father's day gifts with Momo and Rebecca while I studied at home and cleaned up the canning mess.  Friday night, Jay and I went for dinner and Father's Day celebration.  It was a great evening, and the kids were tired and happy after their fun day with grandparents and auntie.

Our routine mostly went out the window, but it's summer, so that's ok!  We had a great week and so much fun together!  I love being home with my kiddos!

Cooking and Cleaning

If the last two days are any indication, this summer is going to fly!  Technically this was still the kids' weekend off from routine, but I don't think they felt like it was a weekend off!

Friday started out with pediatrician appointments for Emily and Jonathan.  Annual checkups out of the way, which is great.  They weren't thrilled by the fact that we scheduled them for 9:30 on the first day off school, but now it's done.  Both healthy, and no shots this time, so they were happy.

We had dropped Abby and Ben off at Momo and Popo's house to play while we were at the doctor, so went back to pick them up, have a snack, and play for a little while before going home.
Ben having fun with blocks in a quiet moment.

After lunch, the three big kids decided to get in the pool again.  Ben still wasn't interested in getting IN the pool, but played next to them.  While they were outside and happy, I turned some fresh fruit into baked treats for the weekend.  One blueberry buckle and peach cobbler later, the kitchen smelled wonderful!

Jay decided to put up the tent in the backyard so they could camp out Friday night.  The big kids LOVE camping out.  Benjamin was super excited about the tent this time too, so Jay decided to try letting him sleep out with them too for the first time.  So four kids and dad went out to sleep in the tent and left me alone in the air conditioning.  Apparently they all went to sleep with no problems and Ben was so excited to get to be one of the big kids.

Sleepy boys!

Saturday morning everyone was up early.  Emily said they had a "bird alarm clock", so they were all in the house by 6:30.  After breakfast, it was time to tackle some cleaning and organizing tasks.

We had decided to wait until school was out to move Ben from his crib to his "big boy" bed, so yesterday was the day.  Jay got the bed all put together, Jonathan moved his stuff (he had been sleeping in the bottom bed of the bunk bed, so had to move up), and Ben moved into his NEW bed.  I think he would have gone to bed right then, he was so excited.
Ben lounging in his new bed.

Meanwhile, Emily, Abby, and I tackled the girls' bedroom.  Between tax season and the school year, it had gotten cluttered and a bit out of hand.
Before cleaning.

We started at one end, cleaned out both girls' clothes that were the wrong season or too small, cleaned off a bookshelf, cleaned out the closet, and totally cleaned up Emily's desk.  It took a good part of the day, but the room ended up looking beautiful.

After cleaning.

Emily looking tired after all that cleaning!

After a hard day of work, we decided to go for a treat.  (And we had coupons for free ice cream, so that helped!)

It turned out to be quite a busy, but productive weekend.  And the plus side to everyone playing and working hard is that they all slept really well Saturday night!  Ben stayed in his bed all night, making the easiest transition from crib to bed ever.
