June 17: Katy, TX - Biloxi, MS

Wednesday morning, Jay and I were up early to finish packing the last few things and close up the house.  We let the kids sleep until 6:30.  They were up quickly and in the car by 7.  We still had things to do, so finished up and got on the road at 7:20.  The kids were all happy and excited to be on the way.

There was still some rain from Bill hitting Houston, but we missed the traffic for the most part and made it to the other side of the city in good time.  We hadn't eaten breakfast before we left, so we stopped for Denny's once we got outside Houston.  I don't think we'd ever taken the kids out for breakfast before, so they were sure the trip was already off to a great start!

Wednesday was all about driving over water.  We drove through the bayous in Louisiana, across the Mississippi River, and across all 24 miles of Lake Pontchartrain.  All of us were fascinated by the miles of bridges.
Entering Louisiana!
Crossing the bayous.
20 miles of bridge through  the Louisiana bayous.  The water
was definitely high!

Lunch  at a park outside Baton Rouge.

The park where we stopped for lunch had a baseball diamond.
It was close to 100, but the kids went to run the bases.

Bridge over the Mississippi River.

Driving over the Mississippi.
The Lake Pontchartrain causeway was a detour for us, but we wanted to see it, so we decided to take the time to drive across it.  24 miles of 2 lane bridge was insane, but so much fun!

Miles and miles of lake!

Traffic going the opposite direction.
Finally to Mississippi!
We decided to stop for the night in Biloxi, MS. We got off the road early enough to eat dinner and then took advantage of the hotel pool.  The kids LOVED getting to swim after dinner.  It was late when we crashed, so everyone was asleep in no time.  Great first day of our trip!
